The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (FOHSS) is one of the four faculties of Tribhuvan University. Previously functioning as an institute, it was restructured into a faculty in 1985 (2042 BS). FOHSS specializes in producing human resources in humanities, social sciences, computer applications, and interdisciplinary studies. It comprises 30 constituent campuses and over 300 affiliated colleges.
FOHSS includes 22 Central Departments and offers 5 Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) programs in Dietetics and Public Health Nutrition, Women Studies, Yoga Science, School Counseling, and Counseling Psychology. Additionally, 14 master’s programs are available, including Security, Peace and Development Studies (APF), Conflict Peace and Development Studies (CPDS), Gender Studies (GS), International Relations and Diplomacy (IRD), Social Work (MSW), Sports Science (MSS), Counseling Psychology, Tourism and Hospitality Studies, Development Studies, Strategic Studies, and Dance. All master’s programs at the University Campus and new programs operate under the semester system. Seven Central Departments conduct M.Phil. programs. Three specialized master’s programs are affiliated with FOHSS: Strategic Studies (SS), Security, Peace and Development Studies (SPDS), and Crisis Management Studies (CMS). Student enrollment in FOHSS accounts for 32% of total university enrollment.
The Office of the Dean provides academic support, leadership, and direction to campuses and Central Departments. It coordinates Ph.D. programs in humanities and social sciences in collaboration with relevant departments and faculty. To enhance efficiency, the Dean’s Office regularly organizes seminars and workshops for faculty members and publishes journals, teaching manuals, and research materials.
The Faculty Board, chaired by the Dean, is the highest governing body. The Dean’s Office operates through four sections: Ph.D. Section, Examination Section, Equivalence, Research/Publication, and Training/Seminar Section, and Administration Section.
The primary goal of FOHSS is to upgrade humanities and social sciences education through quality teaching, learning, and research, including regular curriculum updates.
FOHSS offers courses across numerous disciplines in humanities and social sciences through 22 Central Departments and 12 master’s-level programs. These are delivered via constituent and affiliated campuses nationwide. Bachelor’s programs in humanities and social sciences are also offered, leading to master’s and Ph.D. degrees in most subjects. Five subjects are taught only at the bachelor’s level: Film Studies, International Languages, Philosophy, and Urdu. Statistics and Mathematics, though part of humanities and social sciences, are offered under the Institute of Science and Technology. Overall, FOHSS provides bachelor’s and master’s degrees in most liberal arts disciplines.
